I have recently received an "antique" hand crafted silver sailing vessel, about 3" long and tall, reportedly from England. Stamped on the bottom seam of the hull is an undetermined impression, followed by what appears to be an iron cross icon, the numbers "917" and the letter "F". I am very interested in knowing the origins of this piece. Also, is it best to leave it tarnished, or should it be cleaned? IP: Logged |

Now this is difficult to think about without images. If it is English and sterling, then it will have hallmarks. No hallmarks, then either it's not English or not sterling. On the other hand, little silver sailboats are something I associate with the Dutch in the late 19th century, and those marks can be vague and far between. Anyone else? IP: Logged |

I seem to remember a collection of Silver Boats be auctioned by Jerry Hart at Hart Gallery in Houston about 15 to 20 years ago. Many were large (Multi Mast Galleons) and ornate most had English Hallmarks, but a couple, were small. The opinion at the time was that they were made in Mexico as Gift wear. I would call Jerry Hart and see if he could direct you to some reference materials... That’s the best guess I can make..
