Hi, I have what I believe is an 18th C. Tankard in the style of "Queen Anne". I cannot find the Maker anywhere. There are 4 marks on the right side of the handle near the rim. From left to right the marks are as follows: Makers Mark is a very worn shield with JH in the middle, below a bird (duck?) and above it looks like maybe a crown; then in an oval the lion head looking left; then the britannia mark facing left; last the letter C in a shield. All this dates to London 1718, but the Assay and Standard marks are reversed. The tankard measure approx. 8.5"ht. x 5"w. at the base and tapers. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and I really appreciate any help on this piece. Oh and there are no engravings of any kind. Jane IP: Logged |

I don't think the order of the marks is critical. Assuming you mean IH (there is no J used in marks as early as 1718) there might be several possibilities: John Hodson used a crowned IH with a pellet below in 1695. Then a John Hopkins registered a crowned IH mark in Jan. of 1720. The Problem is, Jackson doesn't list any bird marks used in the period your date letter indicates, so it looks like you're (A) reading the mark wrong, or (B) you've got a hitherto unregistered mark (which is hard to believe, given the century-old English obsession with its own marks. Can anyone else out there help? IP: Logged |

Yes, I think I am reading it wrong...it is so worn. It is a fancy shield and within it is an H or possibly an A with two pellets above it. The letter to the right of the H could be a strike mistake since it is so close to the handle on a curved surface. BUT it looks like the bottom of the letter J and is worn too much at the top to say it is a J or something else. The figure below the H or A still looks like a duck too me...facing left. The Makers mark appears to be worn at the top by someone placing his finger on it while in the process of drinking over and over and over again! I say "his" since this is a large tankard and would take a strong and big hand to use it. Thanks for your previous reply and I hope this one doesn't confuse matters worse. That duck could be shoe? It looks like it is attached by a thread to the left side of the bottom of the H or A...I may really be stretching it now, hehe. Kind regards, [This message has been edited by jj (edited 05-30-2002).] IP: Logged |

Ok I really studied it or what is left of the Makers Mark AND MY EYES...I think the J could be what is left of the rounded part of a D. Then the H: between the upper half of the H has a vertical line in the middle. It might also be a crown above the letters (not 2 pellets.) The figure beneath the initials still appears to look like a duck BUT I am going blind and may be losing my mind too. I went through every mark in The Book of Old Silver by Wyler and saw similars, but nothing close enough to call. Thanks, [This message has been edited by jj (edited 05-31-2002).] IP: Logged |
