I recently found a small silver pitcher at a junk store. On the bottom of the pitcher it says Reed and Barton Silver Soldered, the number 3600, and the initials U.S.N. It also says 16 oz. I assume U.S.N. is US Navy? Any information on origin, history, and price would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

U. S. Navy is a good guess, but only a Navy buff is going to know that for sure. It does sound like a piece of commercial "hotel" plate, of the kind that would have been used for officers' messes early in the last century. Unless it's a really great looking plated object, it's going to be worth fairly little except as a decorative/useful object. Silver soldered is a code phrase meaning high quality electroplate with silver joints (as opposed to lead soldered joints, or some other white solder alloy). Silver plate collectors want fancy and elaborate. My guess is that Navy collectors want something with a specific history (i.e. from a famous ship or shipwreck...). IP: Logged |
