The IS is for International Silver, who eventually owned the Wm. Rogers & Son trademark, along with most other smaller plating firms in the region. Wm. Rogers & Son was one of the zillions of Rogers names associated with the Connecticut (in this case Hartford) electroplating industry. TO make it more confusing, William Rogers and his son had TWO companies, one of which failed in 1865, and the second of which started in 1869. It is all too confusing, even with Rainwater's "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers" in front of me. So this cup, which would be electroplated is certainly post 1898, when International Silver (the General Motors of silver plate) was formed. The numbers stamped on silver are shape numbers, and are only useful if the records from the company survive (and precious few do--Gorham and Tiffany to name two). IP: Logged |
