I am in possession of a European silver creamer with the silver maker's mark of L.B.R. Hepp on the base. Can you tell me the country of origin? IP: Logged |

Since you know that it is 1) european, and 2)silver, I suspect that there are some more marks on it than what you tell us about. If so, please describe them. Tx! IP: Logged |

The only other silversmith markings are on the bottom: "2 1/2". The creamer has a crest on one side: 3/4" oval with mountains, a grassy hill, and a woman/girl standing on the hill in the center. These are the only discernible marks. I assume it is European as that is where my uncle got it. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

'Hepp' is a very german name. A solid silver item from germany, austria, etc. would usually have a proper mark. I don't know what to make of it. Is the spelling of 'L.B.R. Hepp' as you gave it accurate as to the periods and upper/lower case? IP: Logged |

Yes, the periods follow the L.B.R. with a space and HEPP. After the HEPP there is a mark that is not readable, either a "9" or a "y". I appreciate any information you can give me. IP: Logged |

That blows the one weak theory I was entertaining. Sorry, nothing more now but I'll keep the question in mind in case I run across something. Or, a better hope, someone else may come up with an answer. IP: Logged |

Desspirit, if you are still around, I come back to my earlier guess which I didn't dare voice in case there really is or was an "L.B.R. Hepp". After a chance to look through a few books on german wares recently, I believe there wasn't. So, I'm pretty sure that your piece is by 'GEBR. HEPP' with the first two characters either worn or badly struck. 'Gebr. Hepp' (Gebr. = Bros.) is an old silverplating firm that supplies only the gastronomy industry. In earlier years there was considerable demand from hotels for high quality plated silver while in recent decades 'Hotel Silber' tends mostly to be of a lesser weight than standard german consumer quality. As establishments replace their tableware periodically, it winds up in auctions and with dealers. I noticed several 'Hepp' items on the net in recent weeks (all cuttlery); only one was of '90' standard. The style of the piece should tell you something about its age and that might provide one clue to its quality. The "crest" you describe makes sense as the owner's logo. Hope that helps! But if you have further questions, please ask them on the general forum, I'm afraid we are trespassing on the turf of the curatorial heavyweights here. IP: Logged |

I don't know any curatorial heavyweights who would have pulled that answer about a German company specializing in hotel silver! I bow to the real experts in the field, those who have all the books and see far more stuff than any curator. IP: Logged |

Books ?? Who can afford those anymore? What old Pentium can't scrape together off the net has to wait until I squeeze out a few hours at a library during a trip and I can only afford one of those a year! Most of the above is from the net except for checking on the existence of LBR Hepp - I was thinking of all the name permutations some american companies have gone through. IP: Logged |
