We have a coffee pot that has a crown and F.B Rogers and Co. 1888 on the bottom. How do we find out what it is Plate, Sterling Thank you. IP: Logged |

If it's late 19th century and doesn't say STERLING, then it's plate. The trick is, before about 1850 a lot of coin or sterling silver didn't actually say that (except in a few cases). Tiffany started to promote its silver as "English Sterling" in the 1850s, and this caused a trend among all silversmiths. It became a law later on in the 19th century. The name Rogers, which appears in many different companies in New England in the 1860-1900 period, almost always means electroplated silver. IP: Logged |
