I have a set of silver that is very beautiful and I believe old. It was brought out of Germany during the war and given to me. It is very Nouveau looking with what looks to be some kind of flower (crocus?) growing up from a bulb at the bottom of the handle. There is very detailed etching on the blades of knives and radiating up the forks, etc. The marking says HUMBORG w/ a sign (of some kind...can't really tell), 800,
a half moon, and (I think) a crown. I cannot find any information on it at all. It would be very interesting to find out some history. Does this sound like it is Russian?

Humborg sounds German to me. If it was Russian, the name would be in Cyrillic, no? There were plenty of Germans working in Russia, but also in Germany (and the name is Germanic, so it could be from Belgium, the Netherlands, etc.) The "borg" makes me suspect it could be Swedish or Danish, and all of these countries used the 800 standard rather than the 925 Sterling standard.

Is there any chance of getting a picture? It sounds art nouveau, and that would date it to the 1900-1910 years--but flatware has a life of its own, and often patterns (such as Gorham's 1903 Chantilly, which is still made) have a long lifetime if they're pretty. Art nouveau cutlery from Europe is very sought after these days. I hope someone who reads this will be able to tell you more.

German silver marks (1888 and after) consist of:

  • the maker's mark (registered at the Imperial Patent Office),
  • the fineness in numbers, and
  • the crown and moon.

Sounds like your flatware is 800 silver from Germany, made by Humborg.
