I have a three piece silver tea set with the marks P4002 James Deakin & Sons Sheffield on the bottom. Can you please tell me where I might be able to obtain information regarding its date, type of manufacture etc. Thank you for your help. IP: Logged |

James Deakin established his business circa 1865 and was joined by his sons sometime before 1886. It was a firm of manufacuturing silversmiths, platers and cutlers. In 1897, the firm was converted to a limited liability company and was renamed James Deakin & Sons Ltd. If your teaset is stamped James Deakin & Sons Ltd, it was made no earlier than 1897. The firm apparently closed around 1940 at the outbreak of WWII. Are there any other marks on the teaset? The firm seems to have made both solid silver and silverplate with an emphasis on plating. The marks on the teaset will indicate whether it is plate or solid silver. Photos are always a help in providing information. June, thank you for your help. The only other marks on the tea set are the P4002 stamped above the name James Deakin & Sons Sheffield and the engraved or etched crane and bamboo pattern. Thanks again. Jane IP: Logged |

quote: It sounds like the decoration is in the Japanese style. This was very popular on silver (and other decorative arts) in the 1870s and 1880s. Is it possible to submit a picture of the set and its marks? IP: Logged |
