Ihave a silver baby cup given to me 63 years ago. On the bottom is Wm. A. ROGERS and under that S.P.B.M and the number 928 On the side is an engraving of Goldilocks and the three bears. The caption is "Somebody has been lying on my bed!" cried Teeny Tiny Bear. Can you provide any information on this cup? JF ------------------ IP: Logged |

Was it given to you new when you were a tot? Wm. Rogers was one of a trillion electro-plating firms in New England with some variation on the Rogers name. The SPBM on the bottom means Silver Plated Base Metal (or that's my guess anyway). The number is the shape number. Is the design really engraved into it, or die-rolled? It's imposible to tell without an image, but either way, it sounds like something that would have been done in the EARLY twentieth-century (1900-1925), perhaps a generation before you got it. It was certainly part of a set, which would have included a bowl, a plate, and possibly flatware. Given the decoration on your cup, each piece probably had a different scene from the Goldilocks story, or a scene from a different famous nursery story. IP: Logged |

The silver companies had a number of these designs: Goldilocks, alphabet blocks, teddy bears. They were made fairly often dunring the 20th century. The interval between production seems to have been about 20 years. Just as those who received the cup as a child would begin having children of their own, the cup would be offered again. In silverplate frequently cups were offered all by themselves. IP: Logged |

quote: Thanks for the information....you are most likely right about the scene being "die-rolled" it would have been a massive engraving job. The cup is soft metal ....by that I mean you can apply pressure to the cup top and it will change shape, and, can be changed back again. It is so soft I was hoping it was solid silver but I guess that was too much to hope for. My name was engraved on the side but I'm not sure if it was brand new at the time. I am guessing it was.
