Bad news on the museum front from MFA and others - more layoff due to budgetary problems, according to today's Boston Globe: Citing budget woes Museum Of Fine Arts lays off 23 staffers IP: Logged |

Sigh. Not surprising. When they cut funding for the arts in schools, it reflects the relative low value that the arts are given in our culture. SUV's and McMansions and ever more gated communities; but public funding of the arts (which includes curatorial positions to care for an exhibit collections held in public trust) are dropped. The most civilized nations of the world have nationalized healthcare and nationalized museums, so that their citizens, rich and poor alike, can be health and have access to great beauty. Well, wasn't that cynical! IP: Logged |

This is bad news indeed. All I can say, is that when I visited Boston from the West Coast last month, I spent well over an hour in utter rapture in the MFA room which has, among other items, the Paul Revere rescinder's bowl, and a host of Copley portraits of the revolutionary elite. I am certainly grateful for that opportunity. IP: Logged |

I hope you also had a chance to see the MFA's wonderful Gorham Narragansett punch ladle & similar punch bowl, also the Gorham pitcher in the form of a coiled snake and a handful of other neat Aesthetic pieces. IP: Logged |

And, for 2005, The Newark Museum will be mounting an exhibition for my 25th anniversary (half my life), tentatively entitled: Style, Status, Sterling: The Rise and Fall of Silver in America Now I just have to figure out what it means. IP: Logged |

Can we expect a catalogue of the exhibit? Fred IP: Logged |

Sigh, no. Catalogues cost a huge amount of money, and we don't have it. Someday I'd love to publish a book on our silver holdings, but it's not going to be possible for this show. The best I'll be able to do is to do a good website and then a checklist on the website that people can download. IP: Logged |

That would be fabulous. I understand the cost and effort required to publish. I would love to oneday see what the Museum has stored in it's "Vaults". Thanks for any information you may be able to provide. Fred IP: Logged |
