OK folks, Ulysses is bored. Here is an image of a piece we purchased at auction last year (after I helped the owners determine what it was). It was made by Frank Shaw in 1885. He was a repousse-chaser for Tiffany & Co. in their electroplating factory in Newark (which was managed by his father, Thomas Shaw). He helped do all the chasing on the silver plated tea table that Tiffany's sent to the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. This piece descended in the same collateral branch Shaw family, along with the table. Frank died before the table was completed, but I suspect this plaque, very much in the same style, was made as his "graduation" piece. The table is now in the Munson-Williams-Proctor Museum in Utica, NY.

Hello! It's. gorgeous! I have a question regarding the meaning of the term "Tiffany Makers". My understanding is that when it says that, it means that Tiffany really made the item as opposed to sending it to an outside source. The items that are now made that say Tiffany Makers, are they still made in Newark? If not where are they done? Thank you for you time. Jersey IP: Logged |

It is my understanding also that anything marked "MAKERS" was made in Tiffany's factory--wherever it was at the time. Today "MAKERS" means it was made by them (rather than for them); and this could mean Parsippany, NJ (where I've seen them make baby cups, etc, and they have one chaser, a woman); but I believe they have also built another factory--in Rhode Island, which they ironically call "Forest Hill" after their factory in Newark. Or at least, this was the plan when I saw models of the new factory a few years ago. Once I bought a friend a baby cup in the Tiffany store in Short Hills, NJ, and completely fuddled the saleswoman by asking if the cup was made in Parsippany...she affirmed this but asked how I knew that? Hi Ulysses! Thank you so much for your response. Now I know to look for the Tiffany Makers mark as being somewhat special. I hope they are not faking that as well. Enjoy the day. IP: Logged |
