Ulysses, Are there contemporary silversmiths/makers in operation today whose work is now being purchased by major museums? Your post about the 1918 Jensen piece being purchased by the museum in 1922 made me wonder. Obviously the man who brought that piece in recognized Jensen's talent and importance before he became a truly worldwide phenomenon. IP: Logged |

At least one of our SSF member smiths has a piece in Boston's MFA. Here is Robert Butler's tureen:

Certainly museums are buying contemporary silver by silversmiths...I commissioned a tea service in 1984 (yikes) for our 75th anniversary from Ubaldo Vitali--and his work is in several other museums now. Yale, I know has several contemporary examples by living silversmiths; Houston does, too. The MAD in NYC must. Surely the Metropolitan's contemporary design area has acquired silver--but I can't think of any off the top of my head. IP: Logged |

I also commissioned Michael Graves, the NJ architect, to design a silver cup in honor of our then director's 25th anniversary--which I commissioned Tiffany & Co. to make in their Parsippany studio. The Samuel C. Miller Cup was my response to the silver designed by Graves for Alessi in Italy.
