One of my most beloved objects here, which is going out on loan to an exhibition in Montreal next year, is this glass and silver inkwell, designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in the later 1890s.
This is a unique object, one of a small group of favrile-glass inkwells that LCT designed, which were then mounted with silver of his design, but made in his father's Tiffany & Co. factory. This was, by the time this was made, the Newark factory. In all of the known inkwells, the design of the silver mimics the patterns of the glass. It's just 4" high and 5.5" wide. IP: Logged |

Wow, that is a truly stunning little piece - reminds me that I must get to the special LCT exhibit at our local Morse museum before it closes in January. Hugh McKean, who studied with Tiffany, started the museum with his wife Jeanette, they compiled an amazing array of LCT works, including windows rescued from Laurelton Hall after it burned. Can remember when the museum was in a dank little storefront on a side street in Winter Park, has a lovely new building now, yet I don't visit it near often enough. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

This piece literally made me gasp-how beautiful! Do you have any details about the exhibition in Montreal-I don't live that far away from there now, and have been looking for an excuse to go there. Cheryl, it's so funny you should mention the Morse museum; I was just on their website today. For those who haven't been there, it is an amazing place. In fact, I will be there in March; my stepson plays college baseball and will be at Rollins for a tournament, so I am organizing a trip for the parents of our team. The Morse's gift shop is also fantastic! I picked up a copy of Ensko there on sale for single digits! IP: Logged |

Doc - it does have a great gift shop, one Christmas, it was the only place I shopped. For the last several years, one night in December, the museum displays several back-lit religious Tiffany windows in the nearby Central Park as a backdrop for a choral concert. Makes for very pleasant evening. Have been so busy and distracted for the last few years, haven't made it - will make a concentrated effort to go this year. Have lived less than 5 miles away from there for over 25 years, seems that we sometimes take the pleasures of our own communities for granted, not partaking as often as we should. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |
