[15-0384] Our wonderful chief preparator, Jason Wyatt, was flipping through a book and saw a strange maker's mark that he recognized from recently having polished a plated toast rack in our 1885 Ballantine House.
I'd always assumed this plated, rococo-style toast rack was English, and never knew the mark. But it turns out it's Roswell Gleason, Dorcester, MA, one of the fathers of American electro-plating.
This piece has a history in Newark going back to the mid-19th century, when it was new. Thus it is not only a rare American form, but a good document of Gleason's reach in the middle-class market in the 1840s or 50s. IP: Logged |

Is the Indian & Rope design found under the egg cup stand? And is that the maker's mark? IP: Logged |

The Indian mark is under the central post (hence the rivet hole in the middle). The egg cup stands are flat underneath. IP: Logged |

Roswell, senior The Reuben Vose mentioned was originally a school teacher in Dorcester, but after his daughter's marriage, he took over the management of Gleason's factory. His grandson, Andrew Jackson Vose also worked for the firm for many years as cheif clerk and witnessed various patents. IP: Logged |

Gleason fans (or the merely curious) might want to know that this year's Buhler lecture at the Boston MFA is all about Roswell Gleason. The speaker is Catherine Lanford Joy; the date is Sunday Feb 22 at 2pm. Also --when the new wing of the MFA opens in a couple years,it will feature two rooms reconstructed from Gleason's house in Dorchester, Mass. IP: Logged |
