I know Tiffany & Co. did precious little art nouveau silver (see the previous link, Talk to me People)...possibly because of its inherently conservative, carriage trade clientele. But this piece that I found and snapped up at a show in NY 21 years ago (yikes) is one of those rare exceptions.
Tiffany did quite a bit of copper-inlaid silver, mostly tazzi and such, with a sort of arts and crafts design of trees or such. But this vase, which is acid-etched (a technique perfected in the 1890s and heavily used for decades) and then resist-plated with copper, seems to evoke Peter Behrens and German art nouveau. The mark and the pattern number narrow the date to 1906-1907, and to this day I have not seen another like it. The form relates closely to Louis Tiffany glass shapes--but we're pretty sure that LCT did not design this, since he wasn't really an art nouveau designer, either. IP: Logged |
