I had hoped that I'd be able to announce a new gallery devoted to silver at the Newark Museum in the coming year; but alas, our plans were shot down and it is not to be. However, the silver is still here, and I'll be hosting the New York Silver Society for a hands-on seminar here on April 12. But now my big question is where am I going to display that Tiffany 1900 Paris silver I just bought? IP: Logged |

So sorry to hear that. Forgive my ignorance but do you already have one and were hoping to get another one? I feel for you. I am a state employee and we were initially told to expect an additional 20% cut for next fiscal year which meant we had to close 88 beds in our nursing home. Most of the arts programs have also been told to brace for possibly bigger cuts. I have a feeling this is going to be the norm for most states at least for the next few years. And just because no one has said it yet (and you all know you were), I'll go ahead and say it - you can ship them down here and I'll let you display them at my house. You can have your exhibit here and to make it even easier, when you leave you can just leave those behind - LOL. IP: Logged |

LOL! To answer your question, we have a suite of decorative arts galleries in a fabulous 1885 beer-baron's mansion, and silver is included in every room, both the galleries and the period 1885 interiors. But I had hoped to convert one of the galleries (in the servants' quarters) to a permanent silver gallery to focus on the silver I've been collecting for the last 30 years here. It would have been very cool, but the possible funder apparently didn't think Newark was a place to spend money, in spite of our great collection. The story of my career! IP: Logged |

Under Mayor Cory Booker good things are happening in Newark aka the Brick City. So I expect you will find a way. quote: IP: Logged |

Don't get me wrong...I'm a big fan of Cory Booker, and I've met him several times. Smart, classy, thoughtful. He has a handful here in this city, which I love. There is a huge amount going on here, much of it good, and mostly ignored by the media who only look to NJ for comic relief and Newark for whatever bad things it can find. Don't get me started. It's the rest of my adopted home state, my home for 30 years, that I have problems with. Anti-Newark prejudice in NJ is still astonishing and aggravating. Here in Newark is the greatest art collection in all of NJ, with its seven million people, and yet people who live in my own town, not seven miles from this Museum, have never been here. And they consider themselves museum goers. As my daughter would say: what a fail. IP: Logged |

Let me suggest to all our NJ/NY/CT members and any visitors to the NY/NJ/CT area that the Newark Museum has wonderful, fascinating, stellar collections. So be sure to schedule a visit. June and are unable to attend the New York Silver Society hands-on seminar on April 12. Maybe the NYSS/Newark Museum has some room for a few SSF members to join in? IP: Logged |

How disappointing for you and the museum. The collection has to be stunning and all in one spot would be a block buster. Lets hope that things turn around before too long or that you find another angel! I am taking my first trip to the museum next week and can't wait! IP: Logged |
