The two great museums in Toronto, the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) and the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) both include silver, but in very different ways. For the ROM, silver is part of human material culture, and there's lots of Canadian silver scattered in the Canadian galleries. The AGO, on the other hand, tends to be all about fine arts. Except that their founding art collection, donated by voracious and eccentric collector Ken Thompson, has been unveiled in all its multi-faceted glory. This includes a gorgeous jewel-box of a gallery full of amazing early Renaissance and late Medieval silver and silver gilt. (We won't talk about the amazing ship models and the rooms full of carved miniature things in wood and ivory). How nice to see these quirky collections celebrated in a museum known for modern Canadian art.
