On May 6, 2017, the Newark Museum will open its first permanent gallery for American silver, ranging from Colonial to contemporary. "Style & Status in Sterling" will finally look at the range of silver objects made for the American home, and discuss the meaning and making of these things. Literally in the center of the gallery will be this new acquisition (as of yesterday): a unique 1893 tray, called "The Dancers," made by Gorham in RI and NY for their opulent display at the Chicago World's Fair. In pristine condition, bejeweled and gilded in two colors, with enamel plaques from Gorham's NY studio inset like jewels themselves. A bit of Imperial Austria in America. Now in Newark.

Thanks. No excuse other than "my job got in the way." But really it came down to posting photos (and Facebook, which is a PR thing for us). IP: Logged |

At the opposite end of the spectrum for the Newark Museum's new silver gallery, is this chastely elegant coffeepot, 1763-65, made by Myer Myers of New York in collaboration with Benjamin Halsted of New Jersey. These two formed one of the first such partnerships in the colonial silver world. It is the only known coffeepot from the H&M years, although it relates to other coffeepots by Myers. Can't tell you how delighted I am to: (1) See you posting again! (2) Hear about the new gallery I grumbled recently to a senior museum person about the lack of attention to silver in the galleries, and the response I got was that it's not a major focus of interest or a major collecting area. Well....when has that yardstick ever stopped museums? And how can public interest grow or be sustained if they don't get to see good stuff, creatively interpreted? May have to make the journey to Newark1 IP: Logged |

Yep. My silver gallery is my swan-song (among a few such songs this year). I retire as of 12/31/17. But I'll still be looking at silver, and one retirement project is to (voluntarily) write the book about Newark's silver collection, and see if I can't find a publisher or a funder for it. This is good and bad news! Good you are ending a great run on a high note (to stick with the song theme). Bad that we/Newark lose such an astute eye and wealth of insight. I really am hoping to finally meet at the museum so until then I will enjoy your posts here. IP: Logged |
