Chocolate lava cakes, Wood & Hughes compote, Gorham 1880-81 cream pitcher and sugar basket, Whiting bird-ended berry spoon, Gorham Cottage forks, Frontenac knives, and mysterious Gorham pudding/ice cream spoons.

A belated happy Valentines Day to all. Great table setting - I can almost taste the chocolate. IP: Logged |

Lovely, and warming image for a night of howling, zeroF winds! Is that red enamel on the inside of the sugar basket? How completely perfect for the occasion, if so! IP: Logged |

Thanks for the kind words, all! Ellabee, that's not red enamel, it's raspberries! I'll take a better photo of the sugar and cream set and post it soon. IP: Logged |

Here are some daylight photos of the Gorham cream and sugar set, one of my favorites. It's really appealing in a way that's hard to capture with photos. It's heavy and meticulously made, with very well done Japanese-style engraving. The pinched bowl shapes are simple and very pleasing. It feels great in the hands. I like everything about this set.
From above, to show the pinched-circle shapes: The engraving on the other side of the sugar basket: The engraving on the other side of the creamer: The set has the usual Gorham marks, plus the date letters N (on the creamer) and M (on the sugar basket), for 1880 and 1881, along with an inscription--it was a silver wedding anniversary gift. And as you can see, the interiors are lightly gilded, not enameled. [This message has been edited by Polly (edited 02-19-2015).] IP: Logged |

(And the dessert is Mark Bittman's recipe in the NY Times for Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Molten Lava Cake. I won't annoy Scott by posting a link, but it's easy to find with an Internet search. It's surprisingly easy to make.) IP: Logged |

Indeed so, Polly, those are superb! Another thread I missed in the past... Gorham's Japanesque engraving is superb, and I love the frosted finish! IP: Logged |
