What is most likely happening:
The most likely reason some people swear by ketchup is because it contains acetic acid, better known as vinegar. Declan Fleming, a school teacher fellow from the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), says: ‘There is nothing magic about the tomato. You would get the same result with any acid, even lemon juice.’ IP: Logged |

But nobody really advises us to polish our silver by soaking it in lemon juice... IP: Logged |

I have never tried ketchup on silver, but I did try it on copper. It did take the tarnish off however it was not as good as the copper polishes that you can buy for that purpose. William-Sonoma sells a copper polish and it is the best I have found. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 02-25-2019).] IP: Logged |

I would think the onion and garlic in ketchup would just add sulfur and cause problems, but perhaps the sulfur is cooked out. Salt and vinegar mixed together will "polish" copper and brass, but it leaves the metal looking dull instead of glossy - rather like it was stripped somehow - and a strange pink-ish color rather than what we think of as copper. I used to use it on my copper-bottomed pots because it was better than the streaky discoloration from drips and such, but I don't really recommend it for anything *nice*. ------------------ IP: Logged |
