Quite often I find A&C spoons where the bowl has been formed separately and soldered to the handle. I have been thinking that this may have been due to a misinterpretation of colonial spoon-making technique. Henry Kauffman's The Colonial Silversmith explains that spoons were wrought from one piece of silver. When the bowl was formed, a part of the bowl near the handle was left at a greater thickness to add strength. Often a swage was used to facilitate the formation of this "drop", and authentic swages are illustrated in some reference books. To the un-informed, however, it appears that the spoons were made in two parts and soldered together. I am thinking that A&C silversmiths, without the benefit of later research, set out to replicate early American forms and ended up making them the wrong way. Granted, some early ladles were made in two parts, particularly English ones with cast handles. However, spoons were generally wrought in one piece. Any thoughts on this? IP: Logged |

This method has been employed by Durgin in their Arts & Crafts pattern, which I have seen with both a hammered finish and a smooth finish. ------------------ IP: Logged |
