This is sort of a long shot, but I have tried all other resources and thought I would give the forum a try. The mark I am trying to identify is actually on a copper piece, but I am posting the question here in case the same firm worked in silver as well. The mark consists of a shield containing a pair of crossed axes or maces in the form of an "X". In the spaces left to the left, right, and below the point where the shafts of the maces intersect are the capital block letters C, E, and D (reading from right to lower to left). Hope someone has run across this one before! IP: Logged |

Unfortunately, the mark rings no bells for me. What does the piece look like? Is it of the Arts & Crafts Style, Modern, or Revival? It may well be European, and there are few references for European metalwork other than silver. I will do what I can, though! Brent IP: Logged |

I just found a piece with your mark illustrated in a back issue of Silver magazine. The piece was an elegant silver plated Art Nouveau coffee pot. Unfortunately, they didn't know the maker either. The Silver answer man, Charles Williams, thought it was American. I'm still not sure! Oh, well! IP: Logged |

July-August 1988. The more I look at the piece illustrated, the more English it looks to me. If you have the issue, take a look. The motifs are very Archibald Knox-looking, with maybe some Mackintosh thrown in. I don't think it is American, regardless! What do you think? IP: Logged |

Hi, again....I have a strong suspicion that the mark is English. We have three different pieces with this mark – a pair of fabulous candlesticks in Brittania metal with copper flashing, a small (4 x 3 x 2 1/2) copper cigarette(?) box and a larger (12 x 7 x 3) brass box with wooden lining (humidor?). All are very suggestive of English or possibly German Arts & Crafts styling. Motifs include Ginko leaves and Mackintosh-like tulips. IP: Logged |

Years ago, a German dealer passing through my shop identified the mark as being for Carl Dettner of Esslingen, Germany IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info, tagny! It makes sense to me. Can anyone corroborate this testimony? IP: Logged |

Hi, I just came across a piece by this firm in an auction catalog by Quittenbaum in Munich. The name is Deffner, not Dettner, otherwise all of the info is correct. IP: Logged |
