I have a Kalo piece signed Sterling/Kalo/H201. I know that they used s m l for small medium etc, but I can't find a reference to the letter H. Possible for Heavy (gauge)? IP: Logged |

The Kalo Shop did use a numbering system combined with letters. Sometimes S M L were used as a suffix to denote size. I've seen this system used on flatware especially. I have also seen letters used as a prefix to the numbers. I am not sure what the significance is, if any at all. Sharon Darling, author of Chicago Metalsmiths, discusses the numbering system. Early pieces were numbered as the orders came into the shop, starting with the number 1 and continuing into the thousands. This system was revised, according to Darling, around 1921. Pieces were then marked according to a pattern number instead of an order number. It was at this point, states Darling, that the letter suffixes S M L were added. She does not mention letter prefixes in the numbering system. I don't think one can read too much into a letter prefix. IMHO IP: Logged |
