Although it is not widely known, some of the noted Arts & Crafts metalworkers made silverplate in addition to sterling and other wares. As such, you must be careful not to assume that a piece is sterling. If it isn't marked sterling, it probbably isn't, no matter who made it!

Three siversmiths to watch out for are Porter Blanchard, Dirk van Erp(and Michael Van Erp), and Harry Dixon. Blanchard silverplate is usually marked with his silversmith silhouette mark and his name PORTER BLANCHARD. Blanchard also made some highly polished pewter, so keep that in mind as well. If it doesn't say sterling, assume it isn't.

I do not believe that Dirk van Erp made very much silver in his lifetime. To confuse matters, his son Michael did produce a limited amount of sterling and silverplate, utilizing his father's old windmill mark with his father's name. If you see a piece of silver marked Dirk van Erp, be aware that it may be his son's work, and it is probably silverplate, unless marked otherwise.

Harry Dixon was a great metalworker, but he did most of his best work in materials other than silver. However, I did have chance to see an enamelled silver footed bowl, marked with Harry Dixon's engraved signature and an engraved STERLING. On close inspection, the bowl did prove to be sterling, but the foot ring was plated!

Be careful out there!
