I picked up a nice leaf form cake server at a garage sale yesterday marked STERLING HAND MADE MAAS and a mark that is too badly struck to make out. The piece is substantial with a peened surface and a pointed oval handle. Does anyone know the maker or company name MAAS? The name is not uncommon in Holland and I know there is a company that makes silver polish by that name. Related? [This message has been edited by wev (edited 04-11-2004).] IP: Logged |

Could Maas be the metal sculpturer Geert Maas? Maas is supposed to have done works in silver and to have made jewelry. We contacted the organization which represents his sculptures. They didn't know anything about flatware by Geert Maas. IP: Logged |

Interesting; I don't know the name at all. These pieces are obviously of the same set.

What we seem to have is a copy of the Georg Jensen 1908 pattern called Continental. Maybe Janet and William Drucker could tell us something about MAAS? In the 20th/21st Century Silversmiths I did a post and a link to here. To see the post in the MAAS? click here IP: Logged |

I noticed yesterday that one difference between the Maas pieces and the Jensen Continental pattern is that Continental has single parallel line cuts on the handle as opposed to the double parallel line cuts on the Maas pieces. IP: Logged |

June's right. Here is a side by side of the Jensen Continental on the left and the Maas piece on the right. Aside from the single vs double lines, the Maas piece has two semi-circle depressions on each side of the handle compared to the single depression on each side on the Continental. The dimensions also appear a bit different, but this may be due to variations in the photography. Next Saturday, we hope to get a photo of each side by side and post here for a true comparison.

Resurrecting this old thread to ask if anyone has found more information? I just acquired a ladle in this pattern (round bowl, rather than spouted), and it seems like someone who should be identifiable. Wondering if perhaps it might not be someone named Maas, but perhaps something like M__ A__ Art Silver, abbreviated to MAAS.... IP: Logged |

PS to Scott: the link above to the Jensen forum now points to a British/Irish page instead. IP: Logged |

Thanks. I believe I have corrected the problem. IP: Logged |
