Scott sends along this picture of an interesting modernistic bowl and spoon set. Has anyone seen this mark before? My gut instinct is that this is a studio piece, mid to late 20th century. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

I have seen this mark attributed to Volund Shop in Chicago. Grant Wood the painter was involved with the shop during it's short life span. Perhaps we could get Bruce Johnson to tell us what he has found out about Volund.... I have seen an ad of his on the wanted list of The Magazine Silver. I have seen a spoon at auction that was marked with VOLUND on the handle. IP: Logged |

Nice one! I seem to recall reading something about the Volund shop recently; maybe I can find it again. Thanks ! Brent IP: Logged |

I wanted to resurrect this post to see if any of our newer members had insights to share about this mark. Recently I picked up two little butter knives bearing the same signature. They are nice to use, but I would like to know who made them. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 04-07-2004).] IP: Logged |

Paul, Thanks for refreshing the post. I will send the info to a Chicago Historian and see if they can shed light on the mark and if it was ever used by Volund. The shop was shortlived and formed by Grant Wood and a smith surnamed Haga I believe. Mr Wood went on to greater fame as a painter. My Chicago source found no such mark in the archives of the heirs of the owners of Volund. There is a chance that these items were the work of War Veterans and perhaps the V could refer to that fact. Just a guess. The mark on these pieces is similar to the one used by Vermont Copper Craft. They use a large V flanked by small c's. Fred IP: Logged |

Fred thanks for all of your digging. I don't think this is the Volund mark. The pieces (at least my knives) don't feel as well made as Volund products. The veterans guild guess is quite interesting. If that is the case, the "V" could also stand for Victory. IP: Logged |
