Does anyone know - Did the Cellini workshop use silver plate?
As far as I know they used Sterling silver & aluminum. Am I wrong?

Hi,

As far as I know, no, the Cellini Shop did not produce silverplate. Still, the shop was taken over by Randahl in 1957, and devolved in strictly a retail shop by 1969. It is entirely possible that the shop may have sold silverplated articles with the name on it that were not produced in-house.

Still, you can't rule out anything. Porter Blanchard made silverplate that just says "PORTER BLANCHARD" and "HAND WROUGHT". It isn't terribly common, but it is out there. I have also seen some nice copper pieces with an MW mark much like that found on the pieces of Argental (aluminum) that the Cellini Shop produced for Max Weil. I strongly suspect that the copper is also Cellini-Craft. I will post the mark in the near future.

If you have a picture of a possible Cellini-Craft silverplated piece, please post it. I'd like to see it, regardless.

Brent, I recall seeing a Cellini Craft tray on Ebay that was described as silverplate. I have just contacted the winner of the auction and if and when he answers... I will let you all know... the auction did not show the bottom of the tray. It looked all the world like sterling. A very nice piece by this wonderful Chicago workshop.

This is the responce I got from the person who purchased the Ebay item. Seems he is quite well informed about Cellini Craft.

"Cellini did indeed make silver plated items only they called it silver on copper. These items are relatively uncommon and they are signed by the designer Hans Grag. They seem to have had a pattern of first making an item
in silver on copper and then producing them in argental (aluminum) so one can get the same design in either metal. They did not go the other way--from silver on copper to silver."

This technology is wonderful!

Here is the copper mark i mentioned previously. It appears on a nicely patinated small copper bowl with a blue-green enamel lining.

The similarity of this mark to pieces in the Argental line lead me to believe that this is a Cellini-Craft copper mark. I can post some of the Argental marks if anyone is interested.

There is an aluminum-silver alloy called argental that was evolved by William A McAdams of Bayshore, New York around 1912. I can't help but wander if the objects that were are marked with that name are not actually McAdams' alloy.
