Ark Antiques showed us this interesting Arts & Crafts plate marked sterling and TGW. It has good weight and the hammer marks are broad, indicating the use of a heavy, large hammer. This TGW mark has been seen before, but no information has yet surfaced about the maker. Anyone have any clues?

June, Can you tell us if the letters are engraved or stamped? When you have seen them before...are they the same size and font? If stamped they appear as if they are separate letters and not part of a single stamp. What a great find piece... I have yet to make a plate or small tray. Trays are a rather difficult thing to make correctly. What does the edge look like? is it rolled? At the moment I have no clue as to the maker.... What other items have you seen the mark on?

Aram from Ark will jump in with some more input on the plate when he finishes unpacking from the Pier show.

June, I find it interesting to see the textured surface on the bottom of the piece. Those appear to be impressions from the stake of anvil that he was planishing the plate on.... Most smiths use smooth faced anvils to avoid the marks. Do you remember if these occured on the rim of the plate as well? Some smiths also use textured surfaces to create texture on their pieces. I use a pitted pick axe to hammer my metal and then use the textured metal in my work... The camera will come soon and I will be able to show you what this looks like. I look forward to hear what Aram has to say about the plate.

Just heard from Aram Berberian and this is what he had to say about this piece:

quote:
Very heavy gauge. The STERLING mark is a single punch. The TGW appears to be 3 different strikes, not engraved, also not on a single line. The plannishing on the piece suggests the use of a fairly large hammer.
