Kudos to Lisa Koenigsberg for putting together a fantastic two day silver conference at NYU titled Sterling Modernities: International and American Silver from the Arts & Crafts Movement to the Present. The conference was kicked off with a reception at Tiffany & Co. on Thursday evening March 14. The agenda for the conference is outlined below and where possible we provide a summary of each presentation. This conference provided a wonderful and unique opportunity to learn about twentieth century silver and design as well as to meet practicing smiths. The curriculum was ambitious and perhaps overly so given the tendency for a number of the speakers to run over their allotted time, which is an all too common occurrence at these types of conferences. This is always a sore point for me as well as most of the attendees. Although we are all very grateful for the effort that goes into developing a presentation and the information provided, presenters should be respectful of the attendees' time and capacity for absorption. Another oberservation, which I will direct to NYU, is that the projection was awful. It seemed as if at least half of the time the left side of the projection was appallingly out of focus despite repeated requests by presenters to please focus. We ended day one of the conference with a very pleasing reception at the American Craft Museum where we saw some examples of work by some of the silversmiths that had been discussed during the day. The end of the conference was topped off with the annual New York Silver Society dinner that is covered under a separate post ( click here ). Day one - March 16, 2002 (click on links below)
