[The following is a summary of a presentation given at the NYU seminar Sterling Modernities: International and American Silver from the Arts and Crafts movement to the present -- Saturday, March 16, 2002. For a complete list of all presentations click here ] A Metalsmithing History: Cranbrook, Past, Present and Beyond Mr. Griffin restored our depressed spirits following Mr. Hough's prognosis for Gorham. He enveloped us with magical images of the Cranbrook campus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He chronicled its establishment by George and Ellen Booth in the early twentieth century as an educational community. Cranbrook abounds with sources of inspiration including metal work by Arthur Stone, Neville Kirk, Georg Jensen and others. Mr. Griffin spoke about the long tenure of Master Silversmith, Richard Thomas and concluded his presentation with work currently being made at Cranbrook. IP: Logged |
