[The following is a summary of a presentation given at the NYU seminar Sterling Modernities: International and American Silver from the Arts and Crafts movement to the present -- Friday, March 15, 2002. For a complete list of all presentations click here ] Christopher Dresser, Design Pioneer: Reflections on the Modern Movement in Great Britain Ms. Robertson picked up and expanded upon the relationship between Dresser and Tiffany discussed earlier by Mr. Loring. She gave us a fuller understanding of the brilliant design genius of Christopher Dresser who proudly emblazoned his written works with his PhD designation. His motto "Truth, Beauty, Power" is well known to most. Ms. Robertson explained that the Truth equated to Science for Dresser and the Beauty equated to Art. The Power came from the combination of Truth and Beauty. Hence, Dresser's desire to unify art and industry for the benefit of middle class consumers and his designation by Studio Magazine in 1899 as a commercial designer.
