I'm very interested in North American, 20th Century metalsmiths. Most of them worked in other metals, besides silver. Is this forum's interest in silver only, realistic? If we choose to disregard items in other materials, aren't we ignoring a vast field of useful information about the metalsmiths we are studying or collecting? Or are we just not including them in this forum for lack of space? I realise this issue has probably been discussed here before, but I'm a relatively new registree and just wonder...!! IP: Logged |

I, for one, never disregard the work in other metals other than silver. My main interest is as a metalsmith who works in whatever metal I can get my hands on. We can learn a great deal about these smiths from there works in the less "precious" metals. Many of these early 20th century artists did wonderful work in copper and it's alloys. My collection of these craftsmen would be ever so much smaller if I had to limit them only to the silver items. This forum has often addressed plated items as well as copper and brass items by these artists. The heading of this forum states that it is the study of silversmiths not just "silver". I welcome any discussion that deals with "smithing" in all it's diversities. IP: Logged |

Great metalsmiths worked, and continue to work, in all sorts of materials. Some of my favorite pieces are in pewter and aluminum. There is certainly no reason why we can't discuss fine metalwork in all its forms, as long as there is some connection to silver. Who knows, we might be able to link a piece of silver to an identifed copper worker, or vice versa. Basically, feel free to post topics on work in other metals. If we get too far afield, I'll let you know. Otherwise, be my guest! Brent IP: Logged |
