I have an epergne which I am having trouble placing. The hallmarks are: SS over WN (?), then a Lion, Coat of Arms, a fanct backwards B (?) and a woman's head. I think it is London circa 1856??? Would it be plate or sterling? It is quite large with an ornate base and center column with a larger bowl, and three arms with smaller bowls. It is decorated with vines and leaves climbing up the center column and arms. It was purchased as an antique piece at the silvevault in London in the 1940's. I was left this beautiful piece and would like to know more about it. Thanks for your help!!! Judy IP: Logged |

Judy, Welcome to the Silver Salon Forums. It would help everyone if you would post a close up photo(s) of the marks. IP: Logged |

From your description your epergne is sterling silver, made by Stephen Smith and William Nicholson. The London date code for 1856 is actually a lower case "a", but I agree that it does look a bit like a backwards "b". IP: Logged |
