Here is a surprisingly great piece of medernist silverplate holloware from International Silver. This water pitcher seems to have been inspired by Scandinavian modern designs, but I have not seen any direct antecedents. It is heavy, well made and pours beautifully. It was apparently made to accompany the "SILVER WIND" flatware pattern in International's "Hope Chest" line. According to Hagan, Silver Wind was introduced in 1955, and may have been the only pattern in the Hope Chest line. The flatware pattern is one of the many undistinguished asymmetrical "Swirl and Flower" designs that were all the rage in the late 1950's. The pitcher certainly transcends the flatware, in my opinion. There are no flowers in sight, just clean modern shapes. Does anyone have any information about other Silver Wind holloware, or the flatware for that matter? I'd love to know more! Brent IP: Logged |

This pitcher was also sold as part of the 1847 Rogers Bros. Flair pattern. Flair pattern holloware and flatware appeared in catalogs beginning in 1955. A 1967 catalog of Flair items shows the "No. 9517 Beverage Server, Capacity, 1 1/2 quarts" with a retail price of $30.00. With a lid added, it was called a "No. 9501 Hot Beverage Server, 10 cups, Ht. 10 1/4 in." which retailed for $37.50. The pieces were marked "Flair" (in script), "1847 Rogers Bros.", and "I" and "S" in rectangles. IP: Logged |

Many thanks, Stephen! The pitcher certainly does match Flair more closely than Silver Wind. I guess International figured they could get away with using one design to match with two patterns. Are you aware of them doing the same thing with other silverplate holloware? Thanks again! Brent IP: Logged |

I'm not aware, but I really haven't dug into it. The Flair holloware line was extensive, amazingly uncomplicated, "modern", and as a result quite unlike other holloware lines that International had produced. International also introduced about two dozen flatware patterns between 1955 and 1962 that featured "modern" designs on asymmetric handle shapes. Most of these could have been used with the Flair holloware, and I have to believe that marketing and advertising types took advantage of that. Perhaps an ephemera collector out there has a better answer than I do. IP: Logged |
