I have a fabulous sterling bowl in the Japanese style, hand hammered all over with a bamboo design all over in relief. The mark on the bottom is Benten, Sterling. I am assuming this is Japanese, but have found no information at all on this name. The bowl is 16" wide x 9" high. The style is more a punch bowl or jardiniere. If anyone has any idea as to the origin or maker I would really appreciate their opinion. IP: Logged |

Benten is variously a Japanese Buddhist deity with certain associations with the sea, snakes and dragons, as well as a district of Yokohama. Thus Benten alone seems insufficient as the name of a Japanese manufacturer or retailler. However, it could be a fantasy name for the style or pattern. And just because your piece looks Japanese, doesn't necessarily mean it is. There was a strong trend of "Japonisme" in the west from the 1860s onwards which in many ways formed the basis for art nouveau. IP: Logged |
