I recently bought a very modern looking sterling coffee/tea set. The mark on the bottom is simply "sterling silver 950" and below that what looks like a double crown with 3 T's or crosses, and below that "miyata". Anyone know this maker, please? IP: Logged |

Miyata is a Japanese maker, but I'm afraid I have no more details. [This message has been edited by Patrick Vyvyan (edited 10-13-2003).] IP: Logged |

The prefered silver standard used in modern Japanese work is 95% silver to 5% copper. It is curious that they still choose to mark it STERLING even though they are using a higher grade of alloy. My guess is that this it is a marketing stategy and that the market the are targeting is looking for the STERLING mark to show it is of that quality. Does anyone know if there is documentation as to why this is done? Fred [This message has been edited by FredZ (edited 10-13-2003).] IP: Logged |
