Here is a nice heavy handwrought sauce ladle, very much in the style of Porter Blanchard but lacking any maker's mark. Does anyone have an idea as to the maker? Thanks! Brent IP: Logged |

I don't know about yours, but here is a similar piece marked by Haas. It is almost 11" long and the detail is somewhat softened from use -- the previous owner was using it for a gardening tool!

Thanks, Scott. I knew the old posts were there somewhere, but was searching under HAAS. IP: Logged |

Brent, That piece rings a bell with me. I seem to recall the we at ONC were asked to reproduce an item with that handle design. The two sets of cross lines with round depressions at the edge are somewhat like our Karen pattern, a Scandinavian pattern from the fifties. I'll see if I can come up with more when I go back to work. IP: Logged |

Brent, I checked on the pattern that I had in mind at my last submission. We have reproduced some Porter Blanchard pieces quite similar to yours, yet different in the filed detail down in the shank of the handle. That is fine piece you have. Also, recently made a piece like the Maas server, with the steep rise from the bowl and then the sharp transition to the rest of the handle. However, the piece I did was with a round end handle and the whole piece was much shorter than 11 inches. Also, it did not have the lines and edge filings as on the Maas piece. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Geoff Blake IP: Logged |

Geoff, A similar pattern called Neptune was designed and first made by John Pontus Petterson of Chicago. It has similar scored lines in the design. I do not know who has the rights to that pattern. I checked the books I had referencing the Neptune pattern and the ladle Brent shows us is identical. Fred [This message has been edited by FredZ (edited 06-04-2004).] IP: Logged |

Fred, Thanks for that info. I'd never heard of Petterson, but information I get on other silversmiths derives mostly from some contact they or their products have with ONC, usually for a reproduction. Brent's piece has a very Scandinavian look and that would fit with the name Petterson. Take care. Geoff IP: Logged |

Hi all, Sorry for the long delay in responding. I knew I had seen this pattern before, and it is indeed identical to Petterson's Neptune. Obviously the general style was a popular one, with similar patterns from Jensen, Blanchard and others. I wonder if my piece is an unmarked Petterson, or the work of a copyist. The quality is quite high, so I would imagine the maker is is someone we have heard of. Thank you both for your input! Brent IP: Logged |

Is there any possibility that your piece is Canadian? IP: Logged |
