These beautiful handles came from the Richmond, Virginia area and are unmarked, but appear sterling. They measure 5 inches from top to bottom and about 2 inches in the widest part of the curve. There is a rounded screw that would attach these to a base, but they bottom is curved inward, so it appears they were attached to a cup or something rounded, rather than used for a door or cupboard. There was a yellowed epoxy-type cement on the piece where the top and bottom were "sealed" to the object. The screws are attached inside the handle and appear to be original. Can anyone provide information on these? What would they have attached to? Any idea as to maker or date? Thanks.

I wish I could provide you with a definite answer. I agree, they are obviously handles, and probably from a cup of some kind. The cup may have been wood, ceramic or even glass. My gut reaction is that they are most likely fairly old. The screws would probably be your best clue to the age. Are the screws silver, or some other material (brass, steel?). If the screws are hand threaded, the handles are probably 19th C at the latest. If machine cut, they are 19th C or later. A really good closeup of the screw heads and threads MIGHT allow us to determine how they were made, but don't get your hopes up. Regardless, an intersting silver item! Brent IP: Logged |

Brent - here are a couple "screw - y" pictures. See if they help with age identification. The inside of the screw appears to be sterling, the outside, especially the rounded end, seems to be brass in color...almost the reverse of silverplated - with a base metal coating the sterling. Does that make any sense or help in any way to date the piece? IP: Logged |

Thank you for the pictures. Unfortunately, I can't tell if they are hand or machine-cut screws. Could the screw top be gilded? As an aside, on Old Sheffield Plate items, screws were often made of brass, as the rolled plate could not be formed into screws. On later electroplated items, the screws will be plated over. I wish I could help you more. I do think it likely that your handles are quite early, certainly pre-20th century. Brent IP: Logged |
