Hello all, A dealer friend of mine recently purchased this unusual large Mexican sterling tea service. The provenance is quite interesting. Supposedly two identical sets were produced around 1935. One was given to the President of Mexico, and the other to the US Embassy. The set passed into the hands of an one of the ambassadorial staff, who brought it to the US, and it descended in the family until my friend bought it. The motifs, which echo pre-columbian metalwork, were common on Mexican silver prior to the "Spratling Revolution" in the 1930's. Not much is recorded about ealry 20th C makers though. At any rate, has anyone seen this mark before? Could the story about its origin be true? Has anyone seen set like this before? Any input would be appreciated! Brent IP: Logged |

Just an off the cuff thought, but I believe prior to the '50's most Mexican silver would have been 980, not sterling, but my book is packed up somewhere and I can't check. IP: Logged |
