What do I have here? The stamp on the bottom say "Rogers Smith & Co New Haven Conn. 1877 They told me it was used to chill butter.??? It comes in three pieces. The cup/bowl sits in four lion legs, the sides handles have lions heads bitting a log/stick. The middle piece sits inside, its a small silver plate with little holes, and the last piece; the lid has a cross like handle. Can anybody help me? Or give me info on Rogers Smith & Co? It isn't exactly 20th Century, but you do have a Victorian silverplate butter dish. Butter came in round cakes, which would sit on the pierced section. You would put cracked ice underneath to keep the butter chilled. Rogers, Smith & Co. were important silverplate manufacturers. They were located in New Haven, CT from 1862 to 1877, when they were absorbed by Meriden Britannia Co. and moved to West Meriden. Your piece must have been one of the last to be produced in New Haven. I hope this helps a bit! Brent IP: Logged |
