Hello all, Here is a very interesting Arts & Crafts bowl. The shape is very much in the modern style, but it stands on 3 Georgian / Colonial Shell feet. I imagine it comes form the late 1910's or 1920's, when the Arts & Crafts movement adapted to the Colonial Revival. It is quite heavy, with the silky texture of handwrought silver. The mark appears to be a conjoined AW, over ANDREWS & WINSTEN. I was thinking that A&W might just have been retailers, but the trademark does seem to be an A and a W. The dealer I bought it from said that the company was in Baltimore, but had no more than hearsay evidence. Has anyone seen this mark before, or a similar piece? Brent IP: Logged |

Another post rescued from the past: Listed in New York City Directories from at least 1916 to 1933, Andrews & Winsten Inc, Edwin W Andrews and Albert Winsten jewelers, Fifth Ave. In the 1920 census Albert Winsten is listed in New Rochelle. I can't make out his occupation, but he is working on his own account in a studio at that time. In the same census, Edwin W Andrews is living in Manhattan and is working on his own account with a jewelry store. IP: Logged |

In the 1922 New York City Directory, Mrs Lina F Winsten is listed as the president of Andrews & Winsten Inc. Edwin had no children and judging by the names of the officers in the company, Andrews and Winsten Inc became a Winsten family business. IP: Logged |

bascall, Thanks for reviving this thread. Here is a detailed & lengthy Dec 17, 1920 NYT article (in PDF- 200k) about the robbery. IP: Logged |

You're welcome Scott. That is quite a story concerning the robbery. The value of the string of pearls compared to the entire haul is striking. Maybe it just relates to the quality of the reporting. It's quite a trick to get all the facts straight, and there's no question that there was a lot of excitement and interest in what had just happened. IP: Logged |

Yes, thank you Bascall. I guess they were New Yorkers! As an aside, I have seen a bowl of almost identical form made by Carl Forssen of the Handicraft Shop of Boston. I wonder if my old bowl was actually made at the Handicraft shop? Brent IP: Logged |

Brent, I see the similarity to the Forssen bowls I own. The feet are not a style common to the bowls I have seen by this craftsman and I have never seen him use a wire edge on the rims of his bowls. Fred IP: Logged |
