We don't have all of these references. Which are recommended? Are there others?

  1. Fox, Ross.

  2. Mayor, Alfred
    Quebec silver. (Canadian silver collection)

  3. Langdon, John E.

  4. Unitt, Doris & Peter

None of those are much help with regard to 20th century Canadian metals.

The best so far is Anne Barros' Ornament and Object: Canadian Jewellery and Metal Art, 1946-1996. It covers not only the 1st 50 years of the Toronto-based Metal Arts Guild, but 20th century metalsmiths from other parts of Canada. Published by Boston Mills Press in 1997.

A good general coverage of crafts, including metalsmithing, is Gail Crawford's Studio Crafts in Ontario from 1930 to the Present.
Published by Dundurn Press in 1998.

Design in Canada: Fifty Years from Teakettles to Task Chairs, by Rachel Gotlieb and Cora Golden is good for products destined for the mass market, but it does cover several Toronto silversmiths whose intent was to design for mass production, though this never happened (Harold Stacey, Andrew Fussell, Doug Boyd). Knopf, 2001.

I have a large bibliography of Canadian material with metals info. Maybe I help you find other titles.

I've just rechecked Rainwater (3rd ed) for Canadian content, and find she does include some Canadian makers, mostly production-based. Oddly, I don't see Birks or Ryrie listed. Am I blind?

In Rainwater's fourth edition:

  • Birks is on page 47
  • Ryrie is not listed

Birks and Ryrie are not listed in Rainwater's Fifth Edition.
