Good news for collectors of Canadian silver: At a recent auction in Toronto, several pieces by Toronto silversmith, Jack Sullivan, sold for well over their estimates. Sullivan [1918-1979] was a teacher of metals at the Ontario College of Art, succeeding his mentor and instructor, Harold Stacey [1911-1979]. Sullivan's sterling coffee service, made in 1950 as his graduation piece I think, was estimated at $1,000/1,500 and sold for over $4000. Obviously, there is a growing interest in our own home-grown silver. Here's hoping the coffee service joins the coffee set by Harold Stacey, now in the National Gallery in Ottawa...pupil and master, side by side. Does anyone out there have Jack Sullivan work?
