Hello, I have a couple of gravy boats that were represented to me as being produced by Birk's of Canada. Could anyone confirm these marks for me (or suggest other makers if not Birks)... Thx, Jim

Hi there Jim Your marks NO.1 are those of Roden Bros. of Toronto who were listed in business From 1891 till 1922.I feel your piece would be near the end of their career. NO.2 Although much harder to see,I am reasonably sure that it is the work of Ellis and Company;listed in business 1852-1928.They went on to become partner of Birks as Birks-Ellis-Ryrie.So this would make it an early Birks piece. I collect Birks Louis xiv pattern and have identical pattern pieces from Roden Bros.,Ellis, and Birks. It seems all three represent the finest Canadian Silversmithing. Hopes this helps.Found in Units Book Of Marks,It is worth having for any collecting Canadian Silver.Chuck. IP: Logged |

Thanks Chuck. I don't know if this close-up will help confirm # 2 or not... Jim

After viewing the new scan,I have to EAT CROW.I was mistaken on your #2.The hallmark is most certainly not for Ellis. It is a most distinctive makers mark though and I wonder what you suspect the letter in the center of the makers mark might be.I will continue my search, now that you peaked my interest.Could it possibly be a "G"? Chuck. P.S.What a great website andpeople here! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I know that Gorham produced silver in Canada for a while. If the letter in question is a G, maybe the piece is one of Gorham's. This is a real guess on my part because I am not familiar with the marks Gorham used on their Canadian silver. Anyone else? IP: Logged |

I have to agree with chuck about the first gravy boat mark. It is Roden because I have several ring boxes with that very same mark. The second pic, I wonder if the first mark is not a maple leaf with a "c"? IP: Logged |

The hunt goes on... kind of close but... any opinions as to whether this is a match?
