My husband has just bought me a pretty spoon as a gift and a reminder of a weekend spent in Amsterdamn. Its 12cm long and I have never seen anything like it before and the things I can see like it on line are very very expensive and this was not. So I am curious about its age. It is marked 800 and has some unreadable hallmarks in a box. There is a windmill that spins at the top and a priral handle with a boy that has climbed to the top. On the spoon itself which is sort of salt spoon shaped is a fruit picking scene which is raised from the back. It has remarkable clear detail which led him into thinking its not very old but the 800 mark for something which I am pretty sure is silver dosnt tally with that. Anyone have any ideas? Many thanks IP: Logged |

This sort of spoon has been made pretty well continuously for over a hundred years, a specialty of some Dutch makers. As they are really ornamental they don't seem to accumulate much wear. As they're still being produced, and '800' is a current common standard, yours could easily be quite recent. Note that because of the archaic style, these are often represented (or better, misrepresented) as very old. A definite opinion on your spoon could not be given without photos though. IP: Logged |

Recently, I encountered a sugar tongs with the windmill motif. The windmill did not spin, but otherwise it fit right in. These spoons exist in an enormous variety of shapes and sizes. They are made in sterling, 800 and plated. IP: Logged |
