I know absolutely nothing about silver, but I had some silver and mother of pearl earrings which I bought in about 1982 from an antique store in the UK. The only stamp on the silver was 3 numerals: '925'. Someone told me that the earrings can't be dated earlier than 1980 as '925' is a post-1980 silver marking. Does anyone know if this is true? Many thanks IP: Logged |

I belive you can find a discussion of 925 marks in the Jewelry Forum. Suffice it to say that while many modern silver jewelry items are simply marked 925, particularly from Mexico and Italy, you can find 925 on much older items as well. Pieces can often be more readily identified by style and construction than by mark. If it looks new and is marked 925, it very likely is. If it is marked 925 in conjunction with other marks, or appears older, it may well be older than 1980. Brent IP: Logged |
