A friend called me the other day about an art nouveau compote that was marked "MARTELE." It was not marked with any Gorham marks, and had the word HANDWROUGHT, and the above-noted word was in block Roman letters, not in the characteristic Martele gothic lettering. It also had a mark GS Co. I told him it could not be "real" martele, but was a contemporary silversmith, perhaps a craft shop, who was using the word in imitation of the celebrated Gorham brand name. I don't know if Gorham patented the name, or tried to, or if one could even patent such a general name (like trying to patent "handwrought"). Any ideas who this might be? IP: Logged |

http://www.silvermag.com/book901.htm http://www.ascasonline.org/articolo12.html http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=dia0gg.1.1 http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=searchss&state=dia0gg.1.1 At these sites put in the search word Martele. Above are some web sites that are concerned with the name Martele or the Gorman Company. It appears that the only trademark alive today for martele is a service mark filed by Larry J. Pristo. Mr. Pristo is the author of Martelé, Gorham’s Nouveau Art Silver. I do not think this has anything to do however with the silver that you have seen and my search for a “GS Company” did not turn up any leads. IP: Logged |
