The following list without the discussion can be see here: "Living Silvermiths" and their marks - a list ====================================== This is the first step to cataloging contemporary "Living Silvermiths" and their marks. These are from Scotland. I extracted the names/marks from The Millennium Collection for Bute House program. It would be nice to see real examples of the marks. It would also be great if you had other names and marks to add to this list. IP: Logged |

Thanks Scott, I just googled Malcolm Appleby and it was a delight to see his work and learn what a character he is! I am going to enjoy this in the future... and look forward to seeing more of the contemporary silver world. IP: Logged |

Scott, What a treat to see into some of the workshops of these craftsmen and women. I am drooling over the large stakes I see. I will send you a better image of my mark. and an angelic photo of my face as well. Fred IP: Logged |

Scott, If I had known you were going to make that picture public, I'd have burned your camera. The only background I have is a picture of my son taking his Tae Kwon Do black belt test. I,too, am fascinated by the tools visible in some of the pictures. And, Fred, I still have that casting model of the three armed stake, when you need it. Geoff IP: Logged |

What a wonderful project! I suggest adding the French silversmith Roland Daraspe. His picture (taken in his studio) and mark are at his website www.daraspe.com I didn't want to link it here because I'm not sure about how this would sit with Guidelines protocol. Daraspe has trained a number of up-and-coming silversmiths, so has become very influential. There are 3-4 Quebec silversmiths I could recommend for your list. Most of them are also jewelers and medal makers because that is where the commissions are these days. Are you considering jeweler/silversmiths? Desmarais-Robitaille, the well-established liturgical silver firm in Montreal has two silversmith designers, Gilles Beauregard and Anais Beauchemin-Hetu. I'm working on my list of favorites from Denmark for you. IP: Logged |

I e-mailed Roland Daraspe hopefully he will want to join the above list. Maybe he would even like to join the SSF and the up and coming "Living Silversmith's" Forum. We are going to start the "Living Silversmith's" Forum with precious metal smiths, so all are welcome. After things get going the need for a separate forum for one class of smith or another may become evident. In such a case(s) we will create the appropriate forum. Right now, to get things started, we need to find a group of smiths who will regularly and actively participate. We would welcome your recommendations. Please ask your smiths to email me with a photo, mark and contact info. In the subject line tell them include "Living Silversmiths" otherwise it might be missed. info@SMPub.com Thanks

Geoff, I still have to find a reliable foundry that can cast in semi-steel. Fred IP: Logged |

This is a great idea, it's nice to put a face with our silversmith friends here on the forums. IP: Logged |

It is always nice to be able to conjure up an image of the person you emailing or leaving a message for. Scott, I am compiling a list of silversmiths that I think might be of interest to feature and invite to participate in the New Forum. I will contact them before and sample there willingness to participate. I think we will discover a great many wonderful smiths. Fred IP: Logged |

Kayvee, Thanks for the suggestion but I haven't heard back from Roland Daraspe. Perhaps my email was filtered out as SPAM. If you know him please tell him about this and see if he would like to participate. Thanks IP: Logged |

Scott, Your other thread about living silversmiths, without discussion, has a picture of Earl Pardon. It may be of interest that a museum in Kentucky, where Earl originally hailed from, as I recall, recently had a special showing (it may still be going on) of Earl Pardon's work. He was a consultant to Towle Silver at one point in his life and Swift Barnes, the owner of ONC at that time commissioned Pardon to design a flatware pattern for ONC. He did so and it is our pattern called "Elan". It has never done at all well in sales, but is a striking looking design which looks as contemporary now as when it was designed in the 60s. For the museum exhibit I made a place setting of Elan. Strangely, the photo of the place setting in the catalog for the show shows only the spoon bowls and fork tines, and those were not the parts which Pardon designed. At least, at the show the people can see the entire pieces. Agleopar, you wondered once to me how we hammer such thin stock to the narrow width of a handle shank without folds or cracks, but the Elan pieces are so narrow in the shank of the handle that they are actually narrower that the thickness of stock we start with. However, the shank is very thick from front to back, so it is an extra, though interesting, challenge to hammer. IP: Logged |

Thank you Middletom I will see if I can find Elan to have a look, although your description makes me think I might know the pattern. Your idea of an "interesting" challenge vs. mine means that I won't be trying this at home soon! IP: Logged |
