Would appreciate knowing this hallmark found on a set of silver: Date c. 1910 according to owner. Hallmark- LPS inside a square Marked sterling handwrought It is a wonderful pattern and I would like to identify it for a customer who wishes 4 salad forks to complete his set. It is definitely an Arts & Crafts pattern but I have not been able to locate a maker with the above LPS hallmark. Would appreciate being able to assist the owner. Thank you IP: Logged |

What a wonderfull find!!!! My guess is that this set is decorated with cala lillies... A very common design for this silversmith and that of her father Peer Smed... I will have to go back into my research papers to give you her name. Like her father, She worked in New York. The date she worked in is later than 1910. She apprenticed with her father and there styles are similar. Please send us images to post.... I will get back to you with further information. IP: Logged |

Lona P. Schaffer is the name of the maker of the silver marked with LPS in a square. I believe these would have been made in the late '30s or in the '40's. This information is gleaned from one of Aram Berberian's ARK catalogues. I am also in contact with Ms. Schaffer's niece. I had the pleasure to see a coffee set and complete set of flatware made by this skilled New York silversmith. I hope you will be able to share images of what you have. IP: Logged |

To answer the last part.... I think it will be next to impossible to find matching items for this set.... Her work is not common and were it available, it would be rather expensive. If she is willing to send me a sample I would be glad to reproduce these for her. I should probably see a sample before I volunteer to make replicas. I do think it would be a fun task to undertake. So much is learned by reproducing items by skilled craftsmen/women. It would involve experimentation to be able to replicate the decoration and mimic the guage. Of course these would need to be handwrought, as were the originals. IP: Logged |
