I wanted to note the untimely death of a gifted New Jersey silversmith, Terri Gelenian-Wood, of Montclair, New Jersey. Who recently died of an asbestos-related lung disease linked to her early practice of silversmithing. Terri was a promient silversmith and teacher in New Jersey, and her work in flatware is included in the collections of several museums--including Newark. She will be missed by all those who knew her.

    Profiles of Modern Day Silversmiths
    Terri Gelenian-Wood

quote:
Silver is the skeletal structure for my work. All of these works are tabletop objects with a function of their own. Whether they are tools for eating and serving, or learning tools for contemplating the dynamics of relationships, they all express involvement among the viewer, the object, and the maker. They all can be picked up with a dominant hand or both hands and observed. Engineered into my loyalty to traditional silversmithing techniques is my attraction to industrial materials and processes. This is evident in the use of countertop laminates and solid surfacing materials (e.g. Corian). It also can be seen in the "cold connection" methods that are employed. Rivets or other clamping methods allow me to join disparate materials that cannot be soldered. These devises are also essential in punctuating the overall design of a piece. My fascination with silver, used in conjunction with alternative materials, began for reasons of adding color and often results in a bit of irony. The most transcendent part about being a "maker" is the idea of stimulating thought and stirring up images beyond what is physically in front of us.
